Kirkby Stephen sits at the head of the Eden Valley on the A685, a proper stone-built market town on the edge of the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales. It's a fair run south from our Penrith base, but it's an area we know well and travel to happily — from the cloistered market street in town out to the surrounding dales and fell farms.
Most of the housing here is older and solidly built in local stone, from the town-centre terraces to farmhouses up towards Mallerstang, Nateby and Winton. Those homes need a fitter who understands solid and uneven floors, thick stone walls and rooms that were never quite square.
